Over the last year James Spencer has been promoting his latest album ‘Lucky Man’. Between touring Europe performing a solo slot supporting his friends ‘JollyRoger’, playing festivals with his band ‘James Spencer & The Wreckers’ and relentlessly gigging with his duo ‘Bicycle Repair Man’, James has been putting out a waterfall of releases and videos. The next in this series is a folk/country song called ‘Will I See You Again?’. Initially written about a place as opposed to a person, the piece explores the thoughts of someone wondering whether they will see their home again before embarking on a voyage. The track has a transatlantic folk/country rock sound as it draws influence from both sides of ‘the pond’. Inspired by acts such as Lindsey Buckingham/Fleetwood Mac and Johnny Cash from the USA well as more traditional UK/Irish based folk and Celtic bands like Skipinnish, Mad Dog Mcrea and The Pogues, Spencer has fused the sounds to create an upbeat song with distinct ‘summer vibe’s. The music video was filmed on Saunton Sands beach in North Devon. Will I See You Again? After a busy summer of gigs and festivals James is ready to release the next single from his second album 'Lucky Man'. Written during the pandemic about the experience of being in lockdown. James played it throughout his live streams over that time and it became known as 'the lockdown song'. ‘Black Dog’ is a foot stomping indie folk rock song, exploring the feelings of mental drift and detachment caused by the measures. Written with a slight gypsy folk style, the track feels on the edge of control. The rushed pace of the mandolin hook gives it an air of urgency which intentionally seems at odds with the longer more mournful notes featured within the violin part. Despite the track being inspired by and about lockdown, James attempted to write the lyrics in a way that once the pandemic was over, it would not lose relevance. I wanted the line ‘I’m stuck in here going crazy’ to be ambiguous. It could be literally about the four walls of a house, just like those times during the pandemic, or it could be about the walls of your own mind. The song is about mental health awareness. ‘My Hand & My Heart’ is a folk rock ballad that provides a Celtic edge. The song contains heartfelt lyrics and mandolin hooks complimented by sweet violin and flute phrases. Written for a very close friend, ‘My Hand & My Heart’ is a plea to those suffering within their own minds to come back to the light. As soon as the song had been penned it made its way into James’ live repertoire and has already become a fan favourite for both his live streams and his live shows. The music video was filmed at a spectacular location based in North Devon called ‘Black Church Rock’ and the surrounding woodland. It features his friend Eloise Foley who the song was initially written for as the main character lost in the woods.
